Holistic Tips for Seasonal Affective Disorder!

Winter brings shorter days, longer nights, and chilly weather. For some people, this creates a type of depression called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Yep, you become sad.

This disorder causes low energy, sadness, mood swings, and changes in eating and sleeping patterns that linger. Here are simple and natural ways to bring brightness back into your days.

Light Therapy

Light therapy helps winter blues. Special lamps, called SAD Light Therapy, mimic natural sunlight. Spending 20–30 minutes a day under one of these devices has been shown to boost your mood and is recommended by many doctors.

Then we have the amazing Red Light Therapy which has also been shown to be effective for SAD.

Lastly, use natural light: Open your curtains, sit near the window, or enjoy outdoor walks when the sun shows up.

Uplifting Essential Oils

Essential oils have been known to work wonders for moods. Use brands that say 100% pure. Check the web to see what is safe for you and your animals.

Here are a few of my favorites: Orange mixed with Basil to uplift my spirits, Lavender to relax and stress less, and Frankincense to calm and ground.

Open the bottle and take a whiff, diffuse them into the air with a diffuser, add a few drops to boiling water to freshen the house, place a drop on a cotton ball, and sniff from time to time.

Essential oils are toxic in large quantities and one drop goes a long way.

Stay Active

Move your body! Exercise releases feel-good hormones like serotonin. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, that rowing machine you’ve had under your bed for over a year, or dancing in your living room, regular movement makes a big difference.

Eat to Nourish

What you eat plays a role in supporting your overall well-being. Focus on balanced meals that include a variety of nutrients to keep your energy levels steady and your mood uplifted.

  • Warm, comforting foods like soups, stews, and herbal teas can be soothing during colder months.
  • Stay hydrated. Proper hydration is essential in the winter months when you have the heat blasting.
  • Reduce your sugar. High sugar intake can exacerbate SAD.

Practice Mindfulness

Take a moment to pause and connect with yourself morning, noon, and night.

Try different mindfulness techniques like meditation, gratitude, yoga, or deep breathing to stay calm and balanced.

Start your day with a positive affirmation or calming music to set the tone for a calmer, centered mindset.

Explore Energy Work

Freeing yourself from built-up emotions creates room for positivity.

One energy healing technique, The Emotion Codeâ„¢,  is designed to identify and release “trapped emotions” within the body, aiming to improve emotional well-being by reducing stress, imbalances in the body, and emotional issues. This can potentially lead to a greater sense of balance and vitality because you free up energy previously used to suppress negative emotions

The Body Code™ helps identify the underlying root causes of physical and emotional discomfort, suffering, and sickness in the body and spirit. This allows the natural healing in your body to show up in a different way.

The Belief Code™ will be available on my Website sometime in January. This system helps to identify and release beliefs stored in the subconscious mind that create negative patterns in our lives. We can identify the unconscious beliefs that hold us back and the entire belief system holding them in place.

Enjoy the Season!

Winter can be a time for reflection. It can also be a hard time for those suffering from SAD. Please visit your doctor to rule out underlying symptoms if you find yourself unable to cope with daily life.
